Carbon Capture Storage CCS

High pressure technology for the storage of CO2 onshore or offshore

CCS Carbon Capture Storage is the term used for the capture and storage of carbon dioxide CO2. It can be stored underground on land or in the seabed. The aim of underground storage is primarily to protect the climate and permanently remove CO2 from the atmosphere, reducing CO2 emissions. Scientists assume that the climate protection targets set by the government can be achieved if unavoidable emissions are reduced in this way.

The CCS process

Several CCS projects worldwide have already been installed successfully. This process for storing CO2 in the underground can be described as follows: first, the CO2 is captured at the point of origin, e.g. large industrial plants. Various procedures are used for this capturing operation. Second, the CO2 is going to be liquefied. The liquid CO2 is then transported to the final storage site, often former oil and/or natural gas production reservoirs. The CO2 can also be pumped into matching layers of rock via intermediate storage facilities, which are suitable for storing CO2 after professional and scientific testing. Pipelines, rail or ships can be used for transportation. The liquid CO2 is then pumped in the underground and into the intended storage site. The corresponding counter pressure depends on the local conditions and parameters.

   CCS process sequence

  • CO2 is captured in industrial plants
  • Liquefaction of CO2
  • Transportation of the liquid CO2 to the storage location
  • Pumping the CO2 into the intended long-term storage site
  • Storage in suitable rock strata

High quality URACA high pressure plunger pump systems with drive control unit for operation, control and monitoring are used for this process, to pump the liquefied CO2 for example from a vessel via a drilling platform into the drill hole to the final storage location. URACA high pressure pumps ensure process reliability in such a critical application. Pump types from KD719 724 725 825 827….P3-70, P5-70, P3-85 P5-85 are suitable as in this process the largest possible quantity of CO2 has to be pumped in a short time. Power-ranges of up to 2,000 kW can be easily handled by URACA pumps whilst considering flow rates of up to 200 tons per hour and pressures of up to 1,000 bar. However, smaller pump models are also suitable for research facilities.

Further, also special project specific and customized design and requirements, e.g. suitability for offshore use, is not a difficulty for URACA.

When processing liquefied gases often high suction pressures are required in order to maintain the liquid state and prevent vaporization of the medium. To handle such high suction pressure often challenges pump manufactures. A special pump design and decades of know-how ensure safe and reliable operation in this section.
